Safeway Barbecue Battle XVII -A Smokin’ Good Time for a Great Cause
Smoke will rise along a mile-long stretch of majestic Pennsylvania Avenue the first weekend of summer, as Washington’s largest annual street festival brings Americas’ favorite pastimes together in a celebration of food, fun, friends, and family entertainment. Adding to the excitement is the chance to watch the nation’s best barbecue teams cook-off for over $40,000 in cash and prizes in two major competition barbecue contests.
While tens of thousands of Washington-area residents and visitors enjoy the festivities, they’ll also be helping the Boys and Girls’ Clubs of Washington raise much-needed funds. The Battle is the largest annual fundraiser for the Boys & Girls Clubs in Washington, donating over one million dollars to this very worthwhile organization in past years.
The Barbecue Battle is all about the food-and we’ve got plenty of it! Free food samples are featured in the Safeway Sampling Pavilion, along with celebrity chefs and on-going cooking entertainment on multiple demonstration stages. Top barbecue restaurants and caterers from across the country offer all varieties of mouth-watering barbecue, and you can even vote for your favorite in the People’s Choice contest.
Between bites, move to 30 great rock, R&B, jazz and blues bands performing on three stages, and enjoy exciting interactive exhibits like the NBA Nation tour, children’s activities, games, prizes and more to round out the family fun!
On Saturday, June 27, top BBQ teams will “compete in the Kansas City Barbecue Society (KCBS) Barbecue Challenge Contest with beef brisket, chicken, and pork categories. A special prize will be awarded for the “Rancher’s Reserve Beef BBQ Champion”. The KCBS contest winner will receive guaranteed entry into the American Royal BBQ Contest in Kansas City, Missouri.
On Sunday, June 28, the pork-focused Memphis in May (MIM) style contest will determine the “National Pork Champion” and feature pork shoulder, rib and whole hog categories. The winner will be guaranteed entry to the 2010 Memphis in May World Barbecue Championship. All contestants have a chance to win the “Nation's Best Sauce” contest. Teams from 29 states have competed in past years.
With so much to eat, see, and do, it’s no wonder the Safeway Barbecue Battle has garnered many awards, including “Top 10 BBQ Event” by The Travel Channel and Discovery.com.
